If you are to talk about Entertainment, movies are one of the most popular one. We all watch movies but did you ever wondered what are the most expensive movies of all times? How much money did your favorite movie made? Here is the list of 10 most expensive movies of all times.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End is the third film of “Pirates of the Carribean” series which was released in 2007. This movie ranks at the top of our list. It was estimated that around $300 million was spent on this movie, grossing well over $900 million worldwide. It was a box-office hit and the most successful film of 2007.
Even though the movie was nominated for several prestigious awards like Academy Awards, British Academy Film Awards, MTV Movie Awards etc. but failed to gain any major recognition except “Saturn Award” for Best Make-Up and “MTV Movie Award” for Best Comedic Performance by Johnny Depp in 2008.

2. Tangled
Believe it or not, Tangled is the second most expensive film of all time and the most expensive Animated film ever. It is a computer animated musical fantasy-comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The budget for this film was $260 Million which generated well over $590 Milion worldwide. Interestingly, this film was originally titled and marketed as Rapunzel but it was changed right before its release. After spending six long years in production, this 100 minutes film was released on 24th November 2010.
This animation film was nominated for 11 different Awards in 16 different category and managed to win “54th Grammy Awards” in Visual Media category.

3. Spider-Man 3

Ahh, there you go. Another great movie of 2007 by Columbia Pictures. Spider-Man 3 ranks third as the most expensive movie of all times. Estimated budget for this movie was $258 million and successfully grossed over $890 million worldwide.
It is the third sequel film of the Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy which is based on the fictional Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. Regardless all the mixed critics and reviews it is the most successful film of the Spider-man series and also the Marvel’s most successful film.
It was nominated for numerous awards but failed to win any major recognition.

4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This movie ranks 4th on our list. Grossing well over $934 million with a budget of $250 million (estimated), this film was another box-office hit.
Nearly after two years of filming, this movie was released on 15th July 2009. This fantasy film was based on J.K.Rowling’s novel with the same name which is also a sequel of Harry Potter series films. It broke the record for the biggest single-day worldwide gross of all time. Within only five days this film made $394 million which also broke the record for highest five-day worldwide gross in history.
It was the second highest-grossing film of 2009 after Avatar.

5. Avatar

Avatar is the 5th most expensive movie of all time. It broke so many records that anyone can write one special post alone on this film. The official budget of this film was $237 million, however later on additional $9 million was spent for various reason. Grossing over $2 billion, it has become the first film which managed to cross $2 billion mark.
Avatar is the most commercially successful movie of 2009 which also won 51 awards including 3 Oscar Awards. In September 2011, James Cameron confirmed that there would be another sequel of the original Avatar, Avatar 2. Currently he is writing second and third films together and planning to release Avatar 2 by 2016.

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

This was the second film of “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. It has ranked sixth on our most expensive movies of all times list due to some interesting factor. Estimated budget of this movie was around $225 million but it generated well over $1 billion worldwide which also make this film as the most commercially successful movie of 2006 and  the highest-grossing film by Walt Disney Pictures. With an opening weekend of $136 million in the United States, and it was, at the time, the fastest film ever to gross over $1 billion in the worldwide box office.
This movie won Oscar Award along with 29 other Awards in different categories.

7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

This is the seventh most expensive movie of all times. Official budget for this movie was $225 million which grossed over $419 million. It was interesting to see that the official budget of this move was same as of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”.
There are several commercially successful movie which were released in 2008. Even though the gross of this movie was $419 million but it wasn’t more successful than other comparatively lower budget movie like “Wall-E“, which spent only $180 million yet managed to gross $534 million.
It was nominated for 17 different awards but failed to achieve any major recognition.

8. X-Men: The Last Stand

Spent around $210 million and grossing over $459 million, this movie ranks eighth on our list. The Last Stand was released in 2006 which is also the third film of X-Men series. Filming of this movie started in August 2005. At the time of it’s release it was the most expensive film, however it took only couple of years to break that record.
Report says that eleven different companies were hired for the visual effects of this movie. Special effects supervisor John Bruno estimates one sixth of the effects budget was spent on the Golden Gate Bridge scene, which employed both computer-generated imagery and a miniature of the bridge. It has 27 sound tracks added on the movie at various length. The movie was nominated for 29 Awards.

9. Superman Returns

Estimated budget was $209 million which grossed little over $390, Superman Returns wasn’t any box-office hit movie. In fact, Warner Bros was really upset with the commercial return, regardless all the positive reviews of this movie.
A sequel of this movie was planned to be released in 2009 but later on it was cancelled for some unknown reason. It is being expected that the Superman series will be re-started in 2013 with the film “Man of Steel” which will be directed by Zack Snyder with Henry Cavill as Superman.
It was nominated for Oscar along with 21 other Awards and won 9 awards in different categories, yet failed to achieve any major success.

10. King Kong

King Kong (2005) is our 10th most expensive movie of all times. It is a remake of the 1933 film of the same name. The estimated budget of this movie was $207 and it generated over $550 million worldwide. Interestingly, King Kong has sold more than 7.5 million DVDs, accumulating over $140 million worth of sales numbers which is well over 1/5 of it’s total revenue.
Somehow this movie managed to win 3 Oscars along with another 22 awards in different category. Even though Universal Pictures wasn’t quite happy with their success yet this movie managed to rank among the 10 most expensive movies of all times.

Note: This list would be updated with the time goes by. 10th rank was very competitive due to certain criteria. However, we tried to focus more on the budget of the film rather than the commercial success. We didn’t include any movie which is under production or never been released.
