Portuguese chefs cooked world’s largest omelette

Lisbon: Portuguese chefs took the bar 1 step high by cooking the world’s largest omelette on Saturday, according to the Guinness World Record.

The record effort was part of a yearly three day festival that takes place in the town of Ferreira do Zêzere, in the central city of Santarém.

Planned by the local council, the festival aims to bring together local people that may normally live or work outside of Portugal who are returning for the summer to visit friends and family.

Guinness World Record adjudicator Louise Toms was on hand to examine as 145,000 free range eggs were poured into an enormous pan along with 880lbs of oil and 220lbs of butter.

The pan used for the challenge was inspiring in itself, measuring over 10metres in diameter and weighing 9458lbs.

Once the chefs had been briefed, a total of 150 people took to the pan in shifts, using huge flat scrapers that were designed to keep the mixture moving.

The volunteer chefs continually scrapped and pulled the mixture under the watchful eye of head chef Pedro Mendes for six hours.

Tension began to rise as high winds began to build during the attempt, raising concerns that it could affect the cooking of the omelette. The chefs nevertheless had to continue under the tough conditions as increasing the cooking heat would likely cause the eggs to burn.

After about five hours, things began to take shape and a section of omelette was pulled from the pan to show that slow but very steady progress was being made.

After the six hour mark, the tired but happy chefs were finally able to remove their scrapers and transfer the super-sized omelette to a set of weighing scales.

The record to beat was a 4.401 tonnes (9,702 lb 8 oz) omelette cooked up in Ankara in Turkey in October 2010.

After the scales had finally settled, GWR adjudicator Louise was able to confirm the egg-cellent news to the chefs that they had indeed set a new world record, with the omelette weighing in at a whopping 6.466 tonnes (14, 225 lbs. 6 oz.), breaking the previous benchmark by quite some margin.

“Honor Flight” premiere grabs the record for largest audience

Wisconsin: “Honor Flight”, documentary feature film, has set the Guinness World Record for largest attendance at a film screening this week at Miller Park Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

28,442 people attended the screening at Miller Park Stadium, which is home to the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.

Presented by Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, the film depicts the lives of four World War II veterans who were part of the first Honor Flight from the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Hub in Milwaukee.

Though the stadium has a capacity of 41,900, the seating had to be reduced to accommodate all attendees being able to watch the film on the 5,940 square feet video board.

The previous record for the largest attendance at a film screening was 27,022 and was achieved by G7 Cinema (Brazil) for their world premiere of the documentary feature film ‘Absoluto – Internacional, Bicampeão da América’ (2010) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on 7 December 2010.

Iraqi breaks world record for largest flag flown while skydiving

An Iraqi skydiver set a new world record this week for the largest flag flown while skydiving.

Fareed Lafta, who is known for previous skydiving stunts, parachuted while flying an Iraqi flag measuring 4,023.2 m² over the Skydive Chicago facility in the U.S.

“No one has been able to break the record since 2005,” a proud Lafta told Al Arabiya in an interview. “I can’t describe the feeling when I completed the skydive jump…I was in a state of nirvana.”

In October 2008, also Lafta made history when he became the first ever to skydive over Mount Everest. He is also the first qualified astronaut from Iraq and the first from the Arab world to fly a plane to the edge of space.

Lafta said he underwent heavy training for two months because he needed to keep his body in rigid position to accomplish the feat. “I trained a lot and I was injured a lot,” he said.

If he hadn’t maintained symmetry in his dive, he said, the increased air resistance with the large heavy 115 kg flag could have spun him out of control.

Lafta, who also flew in a lawn chair suspended by helium-filled party balloons over central Oregon last month, broke the previous record set by a Turkish skydiver, Gazali Peltek.

Peltek flew a Turkish flag measuring 531.2 m² as he parachuted down to a military base in the central province of Kayseri in Turkey.

In 2011, Lafta performed a “Peace Jump” over Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul to send a message of love to the entire world. He also made a jump for peace in 2009 over Baghdad, his birthplace, carrying an olive branch with him down from the sky to the Iraqi people.

Siblings with combined age of 818 set new record

WITH a combined age of 818 years between them, this unique set of Sardinian siblings are officially the oldest in the world.

The nine brothers and sisters from the Melis family have entered the Guinness Book of World Records following an extensive seven-year review around the world of potential candidates to the crown.

While good genes, a healthy diet and stress-free lifestyle are considered by most experts as the key to a long life, the Melis clan believes a little minestrone can also help.

‘We eat genuine food, meaning lots of minestrone and little meat and we are always working,’ 89-year-old Alfonso Melis told Italian media.

Another of the family, who hail from Perdasdefogu in the mountainous Ogliastra province, added: ‘You just keep working and you eat minestrone, beans and potatoes.’ At 105, Consolata is the oldest of the group, with nine children, 24 grand-children and 25 great-grandchildren. The next oldest are Claudia (99), Maria (97), Antonio (93), Concetta (91), Adolfo (89), Vitalio (86), Vitalia (81) and Mafalda (78).‘The Mediterranean lifestyle is always held up as being beneficial to a long, healthy life, and Italians in particular feature prominently in the list of super-centenarians and centenarians,’ said Guinness World Records editor Craig Glenday. He added: ‘To have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years is incredibly rare.

Abu Dhabi to build world’s tallest gate

Abu Dhabi: United Arab Emirate (UAE) is eyeing to build the world’s biggest gate in its capital, after having world’s tallest tower, and the highest residential building, UAE media reported on Tuesday.

According to reports, the construction of the 25-meter-tall gate had been approved by Guinness World Records, and would be home to a printed encyclopedia and a specially commissioned operetta. The project will launch on December 2, UAE’s National Day.

The printed encyclopedia will have flags of all the countries in the world and more than 250 translations of the Sheikh Khalifa’s name, it reported, and a biography of the president in many languages and a history of the UAE will be included on the gate’s website.

As for the operetta, it will reportedly be organized by the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, and will be performed by members of the community.

According to Guiness Book of World Record, the UAE currently holds 102 records including the world’s most expensively dressed Christmas tree and world’s biggest kebab. The UAE has attracted the Guinness World Records to open its office an office in the Gulf country next year.

Sleeping beauties await prince's kiss in Ukraine exhibition

It wasn't exactly Prince Charming but one of Ukraine's "Sleeping Beauties" finally got a kiss on the lips as she dozed on a dais filmed by cameras -- though unlike the fairy tale she never woke up.

"I'm not sure I would marry precisely this girl, I just was curious whether she would open her eyes," said the young woman who dared the embrace while male visitors shied away.

The venue was Ukraine's National Art Museum and the stakes were -- marriage.

Visitors at a wacky performance called "Sleeping Beauty" were allowed to kiss a series of volunteer Sleeping Beauties -- but only if they signed an undertaking to marry the woman if she "wakes up".

Those reluctant to commit to a perfect stranger were allowed to look at the "princess" slumbering in a white dress in the dimly lit room, but not lock lips.

"I'm not ready to kiss a woman on the first date, and it's definitely the first time I've ever seen her," said Oleksandr Dankov, 43, after choosing not to steal a smooch.

But "perhaps I'll come again," he told AFP.

Yana Krasnokutska, 23, was more daring.

"It's a fairy tale, so I was just curious to try it," she told AFP, smiling after kissing the "Beauty" lightly on the lips.

The performance was created by Ukrainian-Canadian artist Taras Polataiko, who said he had been working on this project for the last two years.

He was inspired by the well-loved fairytale in which a young princess is put under a curse and sleeps for hundreds of years along with her kingdom. She is finally awoken by a kiss from a prince who loves her.

The women in Kiev slept in public for two hour-long shifts each day, with a half-hour break between.

"The idea behind the project is patience," Polataiko told AFP.

"Our people can be patient for a long time. While Beauty is sleeping, the entire kingdom is also sleeping. If the kingdom is to be woken, the Beauty must be woken."

Polataiko said that he chose as his Sleeping Beauties attractive women who were also looking for a steady partner.

"All the five girls I've chosen are gorgeous, smart and waiting for a true love," he said, adding that he initially planned having only one Sleeping Beauty but ended giving the others a chance too.

"We have three or four visitors every day willing to awake the Sleeping Beauty, both men and women," he told AFP.

"This isn't a marriage agency. It's magic, it's a fairy tale. No one knows how it will end," said Polataiko.

Natalya Bakovskaya, 27, was the first sleeping beauty to do a three-day stint waiting for her prince after her sisters told her about the casting call on television.

"When it started, I got really involved in it and felt as if I was in a fairy tale," she told AFP.

"I could hardly sleep with all the cameras and visitors on the first day, but afterwards I enjoyed the two hours of the rest in the middle of the day and even felt a kind of drowsiness," Bakovskaya said.

She said she did not open her eyes and so never did find her prince, although one of the kisses she received was "especially memorable".

Later she tried watching a video of her kisses to identify the young man who kissed her on the first day, but did not succeed.

Finally the fairy tale ended with a non-traditional twist as the fourth Sleeping Beauty opened her eyes after a kiss, to find not a prince, but a princess.

"I was astonished when I opened my eyes and saw a girl," translator Yana Gurzhiy, 24, told AFP after she decided to open her eyes when she was kissed on the forehead.

Ukraine does not allow gay marriage, making it impossible for Gurzhiy to tie the knot with her pursuer, but she said she had felt a connection with the woman who kissed her, whom she named only as Katya.

"I believe it is not a coincidence we had to meet this way. She's a very interesting person, so I hope we'll have some kind of professional and creative partnership."

A fifth Sleeping Beauty was set to take her place in the performance, which was to end September 9. (AFP)

Taj Mahal replica to be built in Dubai

A $1bn (£621m) project to build a replica of the Taj Mahal has been unveiled in the Gulf emirate of Dubai.

The Taj Arabia complex would be much bigger than the original monument to love and include a 300-room hotel, shops and commercial buildings, developer Arun Mehra said.

It would be ready by 2014 and be known as the "New City of Love", he said.

The complex will also house other structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids and the Great Wall of China.

The Taj Mahal, which is situated in the northern Indian town of Agra, is a Unesco World Heritage site.

It was completed more than 350 years ago by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a shrine for his wife Mumtaz and took more than 20 years to build.

The white marble mausoleum, situated on the banks of the river Yamuna, is sometimes known as a teardrop on the cheek of time.

The Taj Arabia complex will be built around the Taj Mahal which is a "symbol of love and will include various facilities to encapsulate the beauty of life, love and romance mixed with the long established Mughal architecture", Mr Mehra, who is the chairman of Link Global Group, told the Press Trust of India.

The developers say they hope that the Taj Arabia will become a new wedding destination and attract couples to it.

An earlier plan to build the complex was shelved when the company was hit by the global economic downturn.

This is world’s most dangerous market

Bangkok: Thailand is one of the most beautiful countries of the world but do you know the most dangerous market of the world is also situated here.

This market is located in Mekong, Thailand and known as Mekong market. The world’s most dangerous market situated at both sides of train tracks around 37 miles west of Bangkok.

Everyday train goes straight through the market. Thousands of people work there daily on the train tracks.

Tropical fruits and vegetables were in big brightly colored piles, varieties of chili pastes and herbs were abounding, Thai dishes were freshly prepared, the smell of fish and raw pork permeated, the usual crowds were moseying around, and someone’s country music wrapped up the atmosphere.

But then, eight times a day, a piercing siren sounds and in a flash the market transforms – the shoppers disappear and the stallholders whip away their produce.

It is such a tight squeeze that the train – appearing to travel at about 15mph – touches the fruits, vegetables and everything else at the marketplace as it passes through.

Once the train gone everything gets to normal.

Facebook says active users reach 1,000,000,000

NEW YORK: Facebook said Thursday that it now has more than one billion users, in a new milestone for the world’s biggest social network.

Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement, saying the number is “humbling.

“This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month,” he said in a statement.

“If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

Interviewed on the NBC Today show, he called the milestone “unbelievable.”

“To be able to come into work every day and build things that help a billion people stay connected with the people they care about every month, that’s just unbelievable,” Zuckerberg said.

The company also said it has seen 1.13 trillion “likes,” or endorsements by users, since the company launched the feature in February 2009. Many of the ad campaigns that companies conduct on Facebook are designed to garner likes.

It said 219 billion photos were uploaded as of September.

Excluding deleted photos, about 265 billion photos have been uploaded since 2005.

About 17 billion location-tagged posts were made on the website, Facebook said, and 62.6 million songs have been played 22 billion times since September 2011.

Music is a huge part of who Amber is. In an interview with the British daily The Sun, her father says that she is "always dancing to music inside of the studio," and when she's not working, music is still one of her favorite topics to talk about.

According to her father, when Amber is not chattering away happily about the usual goings-on at her school, she's constantly talking about her favorite bands when she's at home.

World's biggest school gives Indian kids lessons for life

LUCKNOW: The first day in class for any new pupil can be an overwhelming experience, so imagine arriving for lessons as one of 40,000 pupils on the roll-call of the world's biggest school.

The latest edition of Guinness World Records awards the title to the City Montessori School in the Indian city of Lucknow with 39,437 registered pupils in the 2010-2011 academic year.

The school says that enrollment numbers have already risen above 45,000, with 2,500 teachers, 3,700 computers, 1,000 classrooms -- and one of the hardest first eleven cricket teams to break into.

CMS, as it is known, was opened by Jagdish Gandhi and his wife Bharti in 1959 with a loan of 300 rupees ($6 at current rates) and just five pupils.

Today it sprawls over 20 sites in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, and is as famous for its exam results and international exchange programmes as for its scale.

"The phenomenal growth of our school is a reflection of our efforts to please our parents with our service to their children," said Gandhi, who is still involved in the school's management at the age of 75.

"Our students have exceptional academic results each year and outstanding global exposure. Getting this Guinness record is heartening but it's not just about size," he told AFP.

The pupils, who are aged between three and 17, all wear uniform and each class has about 45 members, but the whole school never gathers for assembly as there is nowhere big enough to hold them.

CMS, which receives no government funding, charges 1,000 rupees a month in fees for younger pupils, rising to 2,500 a month for seniors.

"In such a large school, there are many advantages, one being you get to make a lot of friends across the many sites that we have," Ritika Ghosh, 14, who has been at CMS for two years, told AFP.

"But as the school is so huge it takes a lot of effort to get noticed. Otherwise you are just one of the thousands that study.

"There are certainly more challenges and competitions, which in the end prepares us for real life."

Fellow pupil Tanmay Tiwari, 16, credits the large size of the school for making him more outgoing.

"I used to be very shy but the school has given me that confidence," he told AFP. "Now I am in the college team, debating in national competitions."

The school's size is matched only by its idealistic ambitions, with pupils taught a philosophy of universal peace and globalism under the motto "Jai Jagat" (Victory be to the World).

With pupils under fierce pressure to get good exam results, sport is not always a top priority, but cricket coach Raju Singh Chauhan says selecting a team is still tricky.

"To fish out sports talent in the 45,000-plus students can be a huge problem," he said.

"For this reason we hold inter-branch competitions to dig out the best children and then eventually we get the bigger picture and our best eleven for the team."

CMS first held the title of the world's biggest school in 2005, when it had 29,212 pupils, beating the previous record holder, the Rizal High School in Manila, Philippines, which had 19,738 pupils.

Alumni include Ushhan Gundevia, an executive banker at Goldman Sachs, and Prakash Gupta, a senior United Nations diplomat in New York, as well as Harvard scholars and several leading surgeons and scientists.

"The school is an inspiration not only to the pupils, but also to anyone, anywhere who wants to make a positive difference," Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, told AFP from London.

"The school understands that teaching is the most sacred of professions, and from humble origins to being the largest and one of the most respected educational establishment in the world, it is a truly awe-inspiring story." (AFP)

Polish puppy may be world's smallest

JAROCIN: Anna Pohl from Poland is submitting her puppy for consideration as the Guinness World Records' smallest living dog on the planet.

The teeny terrier Meysi, who weighed about 1.58 ounces at birth, is unwittingly vying for the title of World's Smallest Living Dog. But her owner Anna Pohl of Jarocin, Poland was not initially sure the cute canine would survive.

"It's a miracle Meysi is even alive. When her mother Pusia started giving birth to her litter, I thought at first she had passed a piece of placenta and was about to throw it away when it suddenly started moving," Pohl told the local paper, the Gazeta Jarocinska.

Guinness World Records guidelines specify that dogs must be at least one year old to be recognized as the smallest dog. The organization does not recognize smallest puppy.

Bosnian pilgrim walks to Mecca through Syria for Haj

MECCA: A Bosnian Muslim pilgrim who left last December on pilgrimage to Mecca by foot told AFP on Monday that he has arrived after passing through seven countries including war-torn Syria.

"I arrived Saturday in Mecca. I am not tired, these are the best days of my life," Senad Hadzic, 47, said when reached by phone on a Saudi mobile number.

He said he had covered some 5,700 kilometers in 314 days of walking through Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Jordan to the Muslim holy city in south-western Saudi Arabia, with a backpack weighing 20 kilos.

He charted his progress on his Facebook page, where he posted a picture apparently of an entry/exit card for foreigners issued by the Syrian Interior Ministry.

"I passed through Syria in April. I walked some 500 kilometers in 11 days. I went through Aleppo and Damascus and passed dozens of check-points held by pro-government and rebel forces alike, but I was never detained," Hadzic said.

"At a check-point held by [President Bashar] al-Assad's forces the soldier ordered me to empty my backpack ... When I showed them my Koran and explained I was making the pilgrimage on foot, they let me go," he told AFP.

"I walked in the name of Allah, for Islam, for Bosnia-Hercegovina, for my parents and my sister," he added.

On his Facebook page he said God had shown him the way in dreams, including to go through Syria instead of Iraq.

During the pilgrimage, Hadzic faced temperatures ranging from minus 35 Celsius in Bulgaria to plus 44 Celsius in Jordan.

He said he had to wait in Istanbul for several weeks to get permission to cross the Bosphorus Bridge on foot and two months at the border between Jordan and Saudi Arabia to obtain an entry visa.

The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be undertaken at least once in a lifetime by all Muslims who are able to. (AFP)

Pakistanis make world's largest human flag

LAHORE: Around 24,200 students in Punjab set a new record for Pakistan by making the largest human national flag during the Punjab Youth Festival on Monday.

A Guinness World Record official verified the record. Monday’s record set in Lahore smashes a five-year-old record set in Hong Kong.

“It’s amazing, amazing display of unity of 24,200 people here in Lahore tonight,” Guinness World Records adjudicator Gareth Deaves told a cheering crowd.

“Every single one of you holds this record,” he said, handing over the certificate to Punjab provincial government representative Hamza Shahbaz Sharif.

Another record of creating the largest human mosaic picture was also set on Monday.

On Sunday, Pakistan set a record for breaking the most number of records in one day.

A weekend of bizarre record attempts in Lahore began on Saturday night when 42,813 people in the National Hockey Stadium sang the national anthem together, smashing the previous best of 15,243 held by India.

On Sunday, Mohammad Mansha went flat out to set a new record for making chapatis (breads) – mixing, kneading, spinning and cooking three in three minutes and 14 seconds – while 12-year-old Mehek Gul took just 45 seconds to arrange the pieces on a chessboard using only one hand.
