Pakistanis break largest picture mosaic record

LAHORE: A total of 1,936 Pakistani students broke the record of the largest picture mosaic formed by people at the hockey stadium here on Monday.

The previous records was held by Ansley McEvoy and her friends and family in South Carolina, USA.

Later today, students will attempt to break the record for the largest national flag. Pakistanis have broken several records in the past two days including one for most number of people singing the national anthem simultaneously.

Pakistanis make world's largest human flag

LAHORE: Around 24,200 students in Punjab set a new record for Pakistan by making the largest human national flag during the Punjab Youth Festival on Monday.

A Guinness World Record official verified the record. Monday’s record set in Lahore smashes a five-year-old record set in Hong Kong.

“It’s amazing, amazing display of unity of 24,200 people here in Lahore tonight,” Guinness World Records adjudicator Gareth Deaves told a cheering crowd.

“Every single one of you holds this record,” he said, handing over the certificate to Punjab provincial government representative Hamza Shahbaz Sharif.

Another record of creating the largest human mosaic picture was also set on Monday.

On Sunday, Pakistan set a record for breaking the most number of records in one day.

A weekend of bizarre record attempts in Lahore began on Saturday night when 42,813 people in the National Hockey Stadium sang the national anthem together, smashing the previous best of 15,243 held by India.

On Sunday, Mohammad Mansha went flat out to set a new record for making chapatis (breads) – mixing, kneading, spinning and cooking three in three minutes and 14 seconds – while 12-year-old Mehek Gul took just 45 seconds to arrange the pieces on a chessboard using only one hand.

Thousands of Pakistanis sing national anthem to set world record

LAHORE: As many as 44,200 Pakistanis sang the national anthem together at the National Hockey Stadium, Lahore on Saturday to set a new world record, breaking India’s record.

The event was organised as part of the ongoing youth festival in the province.

Guinness World Record (GWR) officials present at the stadium, presented a certificate confirming that 44,200 people had successfully managed to set a new world record.

The Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also arrived to partake and witness the event.

The participants arrived at the stadium earlier during the day and practiced the national anthem for hours. It was earlier reported that 70,000 people had sung the anthem, however the official score put the figure at 44,200.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Gareth Deaves said that he was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the youth of Punjab and he was amazed to see a big gathering at the National Hockey Stadium.

“It is a very important day for the people of Pakistan, specially Punjab as a big audience has gathered here to create new records in many events including singing of national anthem and creation of Pakistan flag by the audience present in the arena ,” he told the media.

Gareth said that the GWR team was very impressed to see the enthusiasm of the people of Pakistan and he was glad to see the interest of people attempting to create new records for GWR.

The previous record was set by India when 15, 243 people sang the national anthem simultaneously earlier this year.

Earlier in August, an attempt was made to set a new world record in Karachi when thousands of students gathered on University Road to sing the national anthem.

A similar event was staged in Karachi last year when as many as 5,857 people gathered at the Khadda Market ground to make a new record. While the numbers were enough to break the then record of 5,248 people singing the anthem simultaneously, no Guinness officials were present at the event, meaning it was never chalked up as an official record attempt.

1.5 million affected by flood in Naseerabad division

QUETTA: The president of the Balochistan chapter of PPP, Mir Sadiq Umrani, said on Sunday that over 400 people had lost their lives and crops worth Rs22 billion had been destroyed in floods in Naseerabad division.

Addressing a press conference, he said the government had provided foodstuffs only to 3 per cent of the people affected by the floods.
He appealed to the government and the United Nations to accelerate the assistance programme to help the needy.
In all, Mr Umrani said, 1.5 million people had been affected. He called upon the well-off people to help the flood-hit people.
He said that floods had also damaged the communications and irrigation systems in the region and people in Dera Murad Jamali were facing a serious shortage of drinking water. - DAWN

Overseas Pakistanis must get right to vote and get elected, says Bilawal

NEW YORK, Sept 30: People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that despite all challenges Pakistan is making its first constitutional and peaceful transfer of power from a democratic government to a new democratic government due to a strong and democratic set-up put in place by the PPP.

Addressing an international convention of the PPP here late on Saturday, he said Pakistan had been transformed from a dictatorship into a democracy and “we have restored the supremacy of parliament”.
Mr Bilawal said the PPP would always stand by the overseas Pakistanis and was committed to ensuring the right to vote to them in the elections. “We are committed to the idea that dual-nationals should be able to participate in all our country’s civic matters and that includes the right to contest elections.”
He said that no unelected people had the right to question the loyalty of anyone elected by the people of Pakistan. Therefore, expatriate Pakistanis should be given the right to vote and contest the general elections.
Appreciating the contribution of the Pakistanis living abroad, Mr Bilawal said he could understand their feelings as he was forced to live in exile along with his mother Benazir Bhutto.
Highlighting the achievements of the democratic government, he said: “We have devolved power to the provinces, thus decentralising government and bringing it closer to the people.”
Commenting on the Balochistan situation, the PPP leader said: “With every missing person and with every dead body, we realise a Baloch family loses hope in Pakistan.”
“We have stopped living in denial, and we cannot let the province bleed the way it has and taken historic measures to address the underlying causes of the challenges in Balochistan.”
He said: “Where Musharraf treated the people of Balochistan as enemies of the state we see them as an integral part of our state of Pakistan.”—APP

Masood Haider and Anwar Iqbal add: Mr Bilawal launched the PPP’s election campaign at the convention, underlining the government’s achievements and promising reforms for reviving an ailing economy.
One major achievement that he highlighted – “the first constitutional and peaceful transfer of power from a democratic government to a new democratic government” – is acknowledged by PPP’s rivals as well.
The passion with which he eulogised the government’s response to a recent blasphemous video indicated that the party also planned to use this as a major achievement during the election campaign.
“I join the unanimous chorus of condemnation of a vile, hateful, blasphemous video that has unfortunately incited violence across the Muslim world,” he said.
His father – President Asif Ali Zardari – raised this issue at the UN General Assembly last week and later Pakistan presented a joint declaration at the OIC foreign ministers conference in New York as well. The OIC endorsed the Pakistani move but no other Muslim nation shared its enthusiasm on the issue.
At the PPP convention, speakers likened it to “the great anti-Ahmadiya amendment of 1974”, pledging to the nation that the party would continue to serve Islam and Muslims.
Mr Bilawal also claimed credit for gains his party had little to do with.
“It is under this PPP government that overseas remittances have increased from $6 billion to almost $13 billion,” he said, but failed to mention that it were US-sponsored restrictions on money transfers that made this possible.
Mr Bilawal, who came to the meeting with his sister Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari and Ambassador Sherry Rehman, also experienced the traditional PPP ‘jiyala’ culture of shouting, pushing and kicking and had to be escorted by security men when the jiyalas mobbed him.
The jiyalas also fought each other with great zest and turned their attention to journalists when there was nobody else to fight with.
Mr Bilawal’s polished manners, British accent and his politeness contrasted sharply with the crowd’s attitude, indicating that he needed greater exposure to the jiyala culture.
He read from a well-written speech, better suited for a think-tank audience in Washington than a ‘jiyala jalsa’.
He reminded the crowd, which pushed women aside when the dinner was served, that the PPP-led parliament had passed more legislation for women than all past parliaments combined.
“This has been the only government not to hold people in prison for their political allegiances,” said Mr Bilawal as rival PPP factions suggested calling police for getting their rivals arrested.
Mr Bilawal also said that the landmark Benazir Income Support Programme had provided food, clothing and shelter to people, a claim obviously aimed at voters in Pakistan than at an audience which depends on the US economy – and not on a safety net – to earn a living. The Waseela-i-Haq Programme was helping the poorest of the poor to improve their lives and providing jobs.
The programme has improved the health of the poor, and has brought education to them.
The PPP leader said despite external shocks that led to fiscal deficit, Pakistan managed to have an annual GDP growth rate of almost four per cent, a claim rejected in a recent IMF report.
“Our exports crossed an historic benchmark of $25 billion this year. Our agricultural policy has transformed Pakistan from a wheat importer to a wheat exporter,” he said.
The PPP government has more than halved inflation from its peak at 25 per cent to 11 per cent, another claim rejected by the IMF.
“The Karachi Stock Exchange is the 4th best performing in the world. Not in South Asia, not in Asia, not in the East, but in the world,” he said.
Mr Bilawal said the PPP government opposed drone strikes and would fight this war on its own terms, not at the dictation of a foreign power. The US media, however, claimed that Pakistan had allowed the US to continue the drone strikes. - DAWN

PM condemns bounty on anti-Islam filmmaker

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has strongly condemned its cabinet member’s act of placing a $100,000 bounty on the head of the maker of an anti-Islam film that has sparked a wave of violence and anger, as Muslims mounted fresh protests worldwide.

“The government has ‘absolutely’ no link with the statement of Federal Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmed Bilour,” BBC Urdu quoted Shafqat Jalil, the spokesman to the PM house, as saying.
“I announce today that this blasphemer who has abused the holy prophet, if somebody will kill him, I will give that person a prize of $100,000,” Bilour spoke to reporters on Saturday in the northwestern city of Peshawar, a day after violent nationwide demonstrations against the “Innocence of Muslims” film left 21 people dead and more than 200 injured.
Jalil said that the PM would discuss the matter with the chairman of the Awami National Party (ANP) as Bilour was a leader of the party. “No action can be ruled out against the minister, however, presently he will continue to work on his post.”
The railways minister also called on the Taliban and Al-Qaeda to join the hunt and help accomplish the “noble deed”.
The ANP Spokesman Senator Zahid Khan has also termed Bilour’s statement as his personal act and said that it was not party’s policy.

SC admits plea against MPs dual nationality

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) delivered the short order on the petitions challenging dual nationality of lawmakers on Thursday, according to which all members of parliament holding dual nationality have been disqualified.

The case was heard by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and included Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain.
The court had reserved the judgment on September 18.
This petition against dual nationality was filed under Article 184(3) of the Constitution asking for the disqualification of the parliamentarians having dual citizenship in terms of Article 63(1)(c) of the Constitution read with section 14 of the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951.
The provisions of Article 63(1)(c) of the Constitution states:
“A person shall be disqualified from being elected or chosen as, and from being, a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament), if he ceases to be a citizen of Pakistan, or acquires the citizenship of a foreign State”.
The SC’s order stated that the parliamentarians have to submit a declaration before the elections and if the same turns out to be false, he makes himself liable to be disqualified from being elected or chosen as Member Parliament or a Provincial Assembly for making misstatement or concealment of fact, and also exposes himself to criminal proceedings contemplated under sections 193, 196, 197, 198 and 199 PPC.
The following parliamentarians were accused of having dual citizenships:
1. Rehman Malik, Senator
2. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Senator
3. Sabir Ali Baloch, Senator
4. Ch. Zahid Iqbal, MNA
5. Ch. Iftikhar Nazir, MNA
6. Farah Naz Isfahani, MNA
7. Farhat Mehmood Khan, MNA
8. Khawaja Muhammad Asif, MNA
9. Anusha Rehman, MNA
10. Jamil Ahmad Malik, MNA
11. Sardar Shahjehan Yousaf, MNA
12. Muhammad Akhlaq, MPA
13. Tariq Mehmood Alloana, MPA
14. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Chohan, MPA
15. Nadia Gabol, MPA
16. Ch. Waseem Qadir, MPA
17. Ch. Nadeem Khadim, MPA
18. Amna Buttar, MPA
19. Dr. Ahmad Ali Shah, MPA
The short order stated that Senator Rehman Malik, at the time of filing of nomination papers for election to the Senate held in the year 2008, made a false declaration to the effect that he was not subject to any of the disqualifications specified in Article 63 of the Constitution or any other law for the time being in force for being elected as a member of the Parliament/Provincial Assembly, therefore, reference will be required to be made to the Chairman Senate under Article 63(2) in view of the provision of section 99(1)(f) of the Act of 1976, which lays down that a person shall not be qualified from being elected or chosen as a member of an Assembly unless he is sagacious, righteous and non-profligate and honest and ameen.
Rahman Malik, in view of the false declaration filed by him at the time of contesting the election to the Senate held in the year 2008, wherein he was elected, cannot be considered sagacious, righteous, honest and ameen within the contemplation of section 99(1)(f) of the Act of 1976. Therefore, for such purposes Article 63(p) is to be adhered to because the disqualification incurred by him is envisaged under the law, referred to his own statement that he had renounced his citizenship of UK whereas the fact remains that such renunciation along with declaration can only be seen as having been made on 29.05.2012.
The SC also directed Rehman Malik to refund all monetary benefits drawn by him up to 11.7.2012 for the period during which he occupied the public office in the same manner as directed in the case of other parliamentarians.
As Rehman Malik had made false declarations, therefore, the Election Commission has been directed to institute legal proceedings against him as it has been directed in the case of other parliamentarians.
The Election Commission has also been directed to examine the cases of the Parliamentarians and the members of Provincial Assemblies, individually, by obtaining fresh declaration on oath from all of them that they are not disqualified under Article
63(1)(c) of the Constitution. - (Geo News)

Eight dead, several injured as twin bombs hit Karachi market

KARACHI: Eight people including a young girl were killed when two bombs went off in a busy commercial area in Karachi on Tuesday, police and hospital officials said.

The bombs went off in quick succession in the usually crowded Hyderi Market in central Karachi during the evening rush hour, police officer Azam Khan said.
One bomb exploded near a dustbin and three minutes later another went off at the main parking lot in which about a dozen vehicles were damaged, he said.
“We suspect the bomb was planted in a car or a motorbike parked in the area.
“Casualties were caused by the second blast,” he added, confirming that the deceased included a nine-year-old girl. More than 18 others have been wounded.
Karachi city police chief Iqbal Mehmood said: “The blast occurred at a place from where we had recovered and safely defused a heavy bomb last month.
“I can’t say which terrorist organisation or individuals are behind this at this point of time,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.
The powerful blasts were heard several kilometres away, residents said.
The casualties were taken to the local Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Doctor Mohammad Shafqat, confirming the toll, said: “We have received bodies of six blast victims.” He added that there were 18 injured, including three women and one child.
“We are compiling the figures of deaths and injured,” Provincial Health Minister Saghir Ahmed said, adding that emergency has been declared in all state run hospitals in the city.
One victim later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital during treatment.
“The blast was caused by an improvised explosive device carrying at least eight kilogrammes of explosives,” bomb disposal squad official Abdul Hameed said.
“Both bombs were planted, one was on a motorcycle and another on a pushcart abandoned nearby,” provincial police chief Fayyaz Laghari said.
Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing. - DAWN

Saeed Ajmal becomes number one ODI bowler

KARACHI: Just days after getting snubbed by the ICC over the shortlist for world player of the year award, Saeed Ajmal has grabbed the top position on the list of ODI bowlers.

The off-spinner on Thursday moved up two places to replace teammate Mohammad Hafeez as the number-one ranked bowler in One-day Internationals.

The latest ICC Player Rankings incorporate both the Pakistan-Australia and England-South Africa ODI series.

Ajmal was the highest wicket-taker in the series against Australia. He picked 10 wickets at an economy rate of 3.41 with an average of 9.9 in the series. His overall rating of 759 is his career-best.

Ajmal is at the centre of a dispute between Pakistan Cricket Board and ICC after the bowler was ignored in the shortlists for ICC awards in spite of his brilliant performances during the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, Hafeez – Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain — has slipped to second position in the bowlers’ table. The allrounder achieved his career-best rating of 762 during the series, but finally ended at 747. However, Hafeez has moved up a place to second in the ICC Player Rankings for allrounders with a career-best rating of 413.

South Africa paceman Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who headed the bowlers’ table before the two series began, is now ranked third.

Other bowlers dropping down the rankings include Morne Morkel in fifth (down by one), Steven Finn in sixth (down by one), Shahid Afridi in 19th (down by three) and Sohail Tanvir in 56th (down by nine).

South Africa paceman Dale Steyn has re-entered the top 10 in the bowlers’ table. He has moved up four places to 10th.

The other bowlers to make upward movements include Mitchell Johnson in 18th (up by one) Wayne Parnell in 44th (up by 16), Abdur Rehman in 61st (up by 12), Mitchell Starc in 76th (up by 55), Jade Dernbach in 79th (up by 10), Ravi Bopara in 80th (up by 27) and James Pattinson in 87th (up by 47).

South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who was the highest run-getter on either side in the series against England with 335 runs, has consolidated his position as the number-one ranked batsman, followed by Virat Kohli in second position and AB de Villiers in third.

Jonathan Trott in fifth (up by two) and Michael Clarke in seventh (up by one) have also made gains in the top ten of the latest batting table. Michael Hussey, meanwhile, is now tenth in the table, moving up four places.

The other batsmen to make upward movements include Mohammad Hafeez in 42nd (up by one), George Bailey in 49th (up by 21), Azhar Ali in 52nd (up by 21), Asad Shafiq in 55th (up by seven) and Nasir Jamshed in 78th (up by 35).

Pakistan wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal has re-entered the rankings at 78th.

The ICC Player Rankings for allrounders is still headed by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan.

Meanwhile, there has been no change in the ICC ODI Championship table, with England retaining the number-one position. England will hold the position until at least January 2013, when it travels to India for a five-match ODI series.

Australia’s 2-1 series win over Pakistan has gained them one rating point to retain fourth position in the table. Pakistan stay at sixth after losing one rating point.

Pakistan clinch T20 series after thrilling win

DUBAI: Pakistan won the second Twenty20 against Australia in a thrilling Super Over finish at the Dubai Stadium here on Friday, taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

With both tied on 151 runs at the end of 40 fascinating overs in the match, a Super over round was played for the result.
Pakistan paceman Umar Gul restricted Australian batsmen David Warner, Shane Watson and George Bailey to 11-1 before Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq hit the required runs, the winner coming off the last delivery.
The third and last match will be played here on Monday.
The match provided complete entertainment to a 25,000 sell-out holiday crowd, who were left on the edges of their seat as both the teams tussled for victory in the 40 overs.
Pakistan had made 151-4 with Mohammad Hafeez (45), Nasir Jamshed (45) and Kamran Akmal (43 not out) contributing with the bat.
George Bailey led the Australian run chase with a solid 42.
Australia needed 21 off the last two overs as Bailey hit two leg-side boundaries off Gul but his dismissal, with his team needing 10 off the final over it looked Pakistan were favourites.
Pat Cummins hit Abdul Razzaq over long-on to tie the score but off the last ball the Australian batsman was caught, making it the sixth tied match in all Tweny20 cricket.
David Warner started Australia’s run chase with a brilliant 31 off just 19 balls, hitting two boundaries and a six off Hafeez’s first over.
But once Saeed Ajmal came to bowl, the Australian innings faltered. Ajmal bowled Warner and then had Watson (33), taking his tally to 58 in Twenty20 cricket, the joint top bowler along with countryman Shahid Afridi.
Watson had hit two boundaries and two sixes during his 28-ball knock.
Michael Hussey (23) and Bailey took the secore to 109 before Hussey holed out to Gul. Australia at that point needed 43 off the last five overs.
Hafeez said he was delighted with the series win.
“It was an exciting finish,” said Hafeez. “It was tense, but you know Twenty20 cricket can bring such tense moments. In the end I am happy that we won, even though it was in the Super over. I think we fought well in the 40 overs.”Bailey was disappointed at the loss.
“It was exciting finish. I think our bowling was good but we couldn’t finish that game well,” said Bailey.
Earlier Hafeez hit three boundaries in Cummins’ first over of the match but fellow opener Imran Nazir was bowled for nought in Mitchell Starc’s second over.
Hafeez and Jamshed shared a solid 76-run partnership for the second wicket as both charghed the Australian bowling with some aggressive batting. Jamshed hit four boundaries and a six during his 36-ball knock.
He fell to a superb catch by Dan Christian off Cummins, as the fielder lunged backward and held the ball with left hand.
Hafeez hit six boundaries during his 42-ball knock.
Kamran added 46 for the fourth wicket with his younger brother Umar who made 13.
Kamran hit six boundaries during his knock, helping Pakistan to 90 runs in the last 10 overs.

Australia beat Pakistan to win series

SHARJAH: Australia have won the third ODI against Pakistan here today by three wickets leaving the green shirts dejected after they put a decent total of 244 on the board, SAMAA reports. The Kangaroos won the series 2-1.

Pakistan set 245 runs target for Australia after being put to bat in hot conditions. Australians completed the chase with 18 balls remaining, thanks to sloppy fielding by Misbah’s teammates and brilliant 65 by Michael Hussey.

Hussey who made 65, was awarded the Man of the Match. Pakistan had their chances too. They didn't review against Hussey when he was plumb in front on zero. He turned the game around with Maxwell and Wade.

The star spinner, Saeed Ajmal again proved dangerous for the Aussies taking three wickets in nine overs while conceding just 37 runs.

Michael Clarke hailed his batsmen for star performance in such tough conditions. "Can't have been prouder of the guys. Maxwell is a wonderful talent, today is a great example of a team performance. To be able to chase those runs against that attack is special."

Misbah-ul-Haq admitted wasting advantage of good opening partnership. "The way we started, 15-20 runs short at the end. If I had continued with Ajmal, it could have been a different result."

Pakistani openers Muhammad Hafiz and Nasir Jamshed played very well and provided sound base for green shirts to carry on innings honorably.

Nasir Jamshed scored 46 runs and he was caught by wade on Johnson’s ball in 27th over. Pakistan’s first wicket fell on 129 runs.

Muhammad Hafiz continued playing and scoring smartly but finally he was lbw by Clarke in 33rd over when he was playing at score of 78 runs.

After Nasir Jamshed’s dismissal, Shahid Afridi came to join Hafiz but he was caught by Maxwell near boundary while hitting a high shot on Johnson’s ball in 29th over. Shahid Afridi returned to pavilion after scoring seven runs only.

Asad Shafiq scored 27 runs, Misbah 25 runs, Umar Akmal did not score any run, Kamran Akmal 2 runs, Azhar Ali 27 runs and Abdul Rehman 12 scored 12 runs.

Australian bowlers added 18 runs as extras in Pakistani score. Australian bowler MA Starc took 4 wickets against 51 runs while MG Johnson took two wickets against 33 runs. Another bowler MJ Clarke bowled only two overs and took one wicket against 3 runs. - SAMAA
