Pakistan overcome fighting New Zealand

PALLEKELE: Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took four wickets as Pakistan kept their nerve to pull off an exciting 13-run win over New Zealand in the World Twenty20 group D match on Sunday.

Ajmal took 4-30, his fourth four-wicket haul in Twenty20 cricket, as Pakistan restricted New Zealand to 164-9 after setting them a daunting 178-run target on the back of a brilliant career best 56 by Nasir Jamshed at Pallekele stadium.
New Zealand gave Pakistan a scare in the final five overs when they needed an improbable 70 runs, with captain Ross Taylor hitting three boundaries off Umar Gul's penultimate over before he was run out for an 11-ball 26.
Ajmal was the difference between the two sides as Pakistan unleashed its spinners, while Kiwi opener Rob Nicol (33) and Brendon McCullum (32) made major contributions to the New Zealander's reply.
Pakistan play Bangladesh in the final match on Tuesday in the group from which the top two teams will qualify for the Super Eights.
Brendon McCullum, who made the highest T20 score of 123 in his team's 59-run win over Bangladesh, hit four boundaries and a six but was finally bowled in the 16th over by Gul to almost end New Zealand's hopes.
Earlier Jamshed made a 35-ball 56 and added 76 for the second wicket with skipper Mohammad Hafeez (43).
Jamshed hit two boundaries and four sixes as Pakistan plundered 92 off the first ten overs. Hafeez hit two fours and two sixes off 38 balls.
Imran Nazir made 25 with five boundaries.
Jamshed was aggressive from the start, smashing paceman Adam Milne for a six before hitting two off spinner Nathan McCullum's successive overs. He reached his maiden fifty off just 27 balls, improving on his previous best of 45 he made against Australia in Dubai last month.
New Zealand reined them in in the middle overs, claiming three wickets for just 11 runs including that of Jamshed caught in the outfield off Daniel Vettori.
Umar Akmal scored 23 with three boundaries and a six.
New Zealand were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field, with Taylor dropping Hafeez on nought in Kyle Mills's first over while Nicol failed to hold on to a head-high Jamshed hook off the same bowler which went for six. (AFP)

Sangakkara named cricketer of the year at ICC awards

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara was named ICC cricketer of the year and test player of the year at the governing body's annual awards ceremony in Colombo on Saturday.

India's Virat Kohli took the one-day player of the year honour and West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine was named emerging cricketer of the year.

Sangakkara scored 1,444 runs in 14 test matches between August 2011 and August 2012 at an average of 60.16, with five centuries and five half-centuries.

He also amassed 1,457 runs at 42.85 from 37 one-day internationals in the same period, during which he picked up 42 dismissals as his country's wicketkeeper.

The 34-year-old edged out a shortlist of South Africa's Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander and Australia's Michael Clarke to win the award.

"This is an amazing honour," said Sangakkara, who also won the people's choice award.

"I've seen the people who have won it before me and the nominees too, to be named alongside them is wonderful. I admire them greatly and even more so when I looked up at their records on the screen this evening."

India's Kohli was named one-day cricketer of the year for his 1,733 limited-overs runs at an average of 66.65.

He said: "I think I have tried to keep things as simple as possible and it's worked for me on the field. This year has been a learning curve along the way from the seniors in the team. It's been an all-round effort and I'm very happy to have won this award."

Narine, 24, from Trinidad, claimed 12 wickets at 31.50 from three test matches for the West Indies.

South African batsman Richard Levi won the international Twenty20 performance of the year award for his 51-ball 117 not out against New Zealand in Hamilton in February.

The awards were slightly overshadowed by Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal not being nominated for an individual award despite his heroics over the last 12 months. Pakistan in the end decided not to boycott the ceremony.

Saeed Ajmal becomes number one ODI bowler

KARACHI: Just days after getting snubbed by the ICC over the shortlist for world player of the year award, Saeed Ajmal has grabbed the top position on the list of ODI bowlers.

The off-spinner on Thursday moved up two places to replace teammate Mohammad Hafeez as the number-one ranked bowler in One-day Internationals.

The latest ICC Player Rankings incorporate both the Pakistan-Australia and England-South Africa ODI series.

Ajmal was the highest wicket-taker in the series against Australia. He picked 10 wickets at an economy rate of 3.41 with an average of 9.9 in the series. His overall rating of 759 is his career-best.

Ajmal is at the centre of a dispute between Pakistan Cricket Board and ICC after the bowler was ignored in the shortlists for ICC awards in spite of his brilliant performances during the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, Hafeez – Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain — has slipped to second position in the bowlers’ table. The allrounder achieved his career-best rating of 762 during the series, but finally ended at 747. However, Hafeez has moved up a place to second in the ICC Player Rankings for allrounders with a career-best rating of 413.

South Africa paceman Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who headed the bowlers’ table before the two series began, is now ranked third.

Other bowlers dropping down the rankings include Morne Morkel in fifth (down by one), Steven Finn in sixth (down by one), Shahid Afridi in 19th (down by three) and Sohail Tanvir in 56th (down by nine).

South Africa paceman Dale Steyn has re-entered the top 10 in the bowlers’ table. He has moved up four places to 10th.

The other bowlers to make upward movements include Mitchell Johnson in 18th (up by one) Wayne Parnell in 44th (up by 16), Abdur Rehman in 61st (up by 12), Mitchell Starc in 76th (up by 55), Jade Dernbach in 79th (up by 10), Ravi Bopara in 80th (up by 27) and James Pattinson in 87th (up by 47).

South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who was the highest run-getter on either side in the series against England with 335 runs, has consolidated his position as the number-one ranked batsman, followed by Virat Kohli in second position and AB de Villiers in third.

Jonathan Trott in fifth (up by two) and Michael Clarke in seventh (up by one) have also made gains in the top ten of the latest batting table. Michael Hussey, meanwhile, is now tenth in the table, moving up four places.

The other batsmen to make upward movements include Mohammad Hafeez in 42nd (up by one), George Bailey in 49th (up by 21), Azhar Ali in 52nd (up by 21), Asad Shafiq in 55th (up by seven) and Nasir Jamshed in 78th (up by 35).

Pakistan wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal has re-entered the rankings at 78th.

The ICC Player Rankings for allrounders is still headed by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan.

Meanwhile, there has been no change in the ICC ODI Championship table, with England retaining the number-one position. England will hold the position until at least January 2013, when it travels to India for a five-match ODI series.

Australia’s 2-1 series win over Pakistan has gained them one rating point to retain fourth position in the table. Pakistan stay at sixth after losing one rating point.
